It was the best experience ever!
Milika Taufateau was the first recipient of our new Outward Bound Classic Course Award sponsored by Outward Bound and the Alexandra Kilpatrick Bequest . Before she left for the 21 day course at Anakiwa at the top of the South Island in November, Milika spoke about why she wanted to undertake the Outward Bound challenge.
“I first heard of Outward Bound back in 2013 in high school. Ever since then, Outward Bound has been sitting at the top of my bucket list. I’m a huge outdoors lover! Most of my favourite school memories were the outdoors trips and courses we got to do. I’m of Tongan descend, and in my culture, girls are expected to stay indoors and do lady-like chores. The activities at Outward Bound are something my parents would never have allowed me to do by myself or with a few friends. I am so excited about what lies in store in Anikiwa.
And she returned buzzing from the experience. “It was 21 days of adventure, challenge, and learning about myself and others. For me, it was like heaven. I felt like I belonged there and it was what I was born to do! ‘There is more in you than you think’ That is what I told myself every time I was challenged. Believing there is more in me was how I overcame those challenges. I walked away from Outward Bound physically and mentally stronger. I felt like I could take on the world and there was nothing to stop me. It was the BEST EXPERIENCE EVER!”
“I feel extremely fortunate to have had the opportunity to take on an Outward Bound course. I’ve learned life lessons and skills that will help me at any stage or age in life. I discovered inner strength I never knew I had in me. Thinking about what the award has done for me fills my heart with so much joy, gratitude and appreciation. Joy, because I had SO MUCH FUN! Gratitude, for it was a once in a lifetime opportunity. Appreciation towards the New Horizons for Women Trust and the award sponsors, Outward Bound and the Alexandra Kilpatrick Bequest for making it possible. I know the next Outward Bound Classic Course Award awardee will feel the way I feel now. Tack så mycket!”
