Foundation/Diploma Studies Awards

The Second-Chance Education Foundation Certificate and Diploma Studies Awards are for women who are enrolled in a New Zealand approved tertiary qualification and who do not already have a tertiary qualification. Hinewai Clarke received one of the many Second Chance Education Foundation awards given in 2017.

Hinewai (Ngati Whatua, Hauraki/Waikato) moved herself and her children to Auckland from Christchurch to seek and find oranga for her whanau. She wanted her children raised on the marae papakainga, connected to and nurtured by their tikanga, reo and whakapapa. Hinewai participates in every opportunity whether it is wananga reo, haka or matauranga Maori to enable, empower and strengthen herself for the future of her children. Both children are in total immersion reo environments for their education and Hinewai is studying her level 4 certificate in te reo Maori at Te Wananga Takiura O Nga Kura Kaupapa Maori O Aotearoa. She will graduate at the end of this year. Hinewai wishes to thank Ngati Paoa for the opportunity to apply and the sponsoring Chenery Memorial Trust for the award as it will make a significant difference to her aspirations going forward
