Let the adventure begin!

From Auckland to Anakiwa  – here comes Milika.

Milika Taufateau is this year’s recipient of our new Outward Bound Classic Course Award sponsored by Outward Bound and the Alexandra Kilpatrick Bequest .  Milika is busy preparing  for her participation in the 21 day course which will be held in Anakiwa at the top of the South Island in November. Milika shares her story of what this means to her.

“I first heard of Outward Bound  back in 2013 in high school. Ever since then,  Outward Bound  has been sitting at the top of my bucket list. I’m a huge outdoors lover!  Most of my favourite school memories were the outdoors trips and courses we got to do. I’m of Tongan descend, and in my culture, girls are expected to stay indoors and do lady-like chores. The activities at Outward Bound  are something my parents would never have allowed me to do by myself or with a few friends. I am so excited about what lies in store in Anikiwa.

I also love that Outward Bound teaches you about team work, helps you identify and overcome  your weaknesses, and challenges you mentally, emotionally and physically. ‘Grateful’, ‘honoured’ and ‘excited ‘ are all understatements to how I feel about the opportunity to attend the Outward Bound Classic Course.

To prepare for Outward Bound, I have been training five  afternoons a week to try and get fit for the course. It’s been challenging but the countdown to the course has kept me motivated.

I’m planning to start studying psychology next semester and the change has been emotionally and mentally hard for me.  I’m hoping Outward Bound will help me focus on the present and future. I also hope to gain confidence in my abilities, strengthen my areas of weakness, grow mentally and emotionally, and of course gain memories that will last a lifetime.’

We wish Milika all the best for an amazing experience at Outward Bound. Check this NEWS section on our website at the end of November to find out about what happens on her adventure down South.
