2006 Winners - The Auckland Muslim Girls Association

The Auckland Muslim Girls Association won this award for its ‘Mission of Peace’ camp planned for mid-2006.  The three-day camp brought young women from different Muslim and non-Muslim communities together to discuss discrimination, peace and practical approaches to living harmoniously.  The recipients of the Award, presented by Prime Minister Helen Clark, on behalf of the Auckland Muslim Girls Association were Tayyaba Khan, President of the Association and Azoora Ali, member of the Executive of the Association.

2005 - New Horizons for Women Trust – Society for Research on Women (SROW) Award ($5,000):

Dr Anita Gibbs and Maria Lucas
Dr Anita Gibbs and Maria Lucas investigated Pacific women’s use of various services in Dunedin with the aim of improving health, justice, education and welfare services in the city.  Anita is a senior lecturer in social work at the University of Otago, and Maria is a social and community work supervisor.

2005 – National Advisory Council on the Employment of Women Research Award ($5,000): Vivienne Hunt

Vivienne Hunt investigated the career development opportunities for women provided by work in the growing call centre industry.  In contrast to other claims, she sees call centres offering new career paths for women.  A sole parent with two dependent children, Vivienne is a part-time PhD student at the University of Auckland.

2005 – New Zealand Federation of Graduate Women (Wellington) Research Award ($5,000): Kate Satterthwaite

Kate Satterthwaite worked with young Somali women, researching the negotiation of traditional family expectations against wider societal norms.  Undertaken as part of a M.Sc. (Hons) degree in Human Geography and Development Studies at Victoria University of Wellington, Kate’s project will model an effective cross-cultural participatory process to help negotiate issues.

The Trust’s research awards, which may be up to the value of $5,000 each, are to assist a woman, a group of women or a community group to undertake, within NZ, research on issues of importance to women and girls.  The number of research awards available each year varies depending on sponsorship.

Research awards are funded by the Trust’s nominating organisations or other organisations and individual sponsors who support the aims of the Trust.

Eligibility

Research awards are available to women who are undertaking research projects in New Zealand on issues of importance to women and girls.

Applications for 2010 close on 31 May 2010.
