Award Ceremony Recognises Importance of Tertiary Education for Women
The New Horizons for Women Trust held its annual Wellington awards ceremony on Wednesday, 9 September 2009, at the Grand Hall of Parliament.
It was the second of five nationwide ceremonies the Trust is organising this year to award 26 women a total of $88,000.
“This award ceremony is about recognising the importance of tertiary education for women. The Trust wants to acknowledge the determination of the second-chance award winners in accessing tertiary education, the continued importance of women researchers studying issues that affect women and the key role of women in promoting peace in our communities”, said Judy Owen, New Horizons for Women Trustee and Coordinator of the Wellington Ceremony.
Nine awards were presented in Wellington, comprising six second-chance education and training awards, one research award, the Sonja Davies Peace Award, The Ria McBride Public Service Management Award that assists women in the public service in positions of leadership will also be presented at this ceremony.
The winners are from Wellington, Porirua, the Wairarapa, Kapiti Coast, Palmerston North and Waitakere.
The ceremony was hosted by Metiria Turei Co-leader of the Green Party. “New Horizons for Women Trust is doing admirable work in the community and I am proud to be associated with them.” Ms Turei says.
The New Horizons for Women Trust has been in existence for 19 years. Over that time the Trust has given awards to 240 women and women’s organisations to the value of almost $680,000. The awards are funded entirely from donations and grants from individuals, women’s organisations, and other community organisations.
